Being a Dad is not being a Mom.  It’s not being Mom’s helper. It’s not being the babysitter.
It’s not just being the biggest toy in the room.

Your role and your impact in your children’s lives is unique and can be one of the most powerful, influential experiences that will guide them in their future decision making and healthy sense of self.

Does that sound like a big deal?  It is.

Research has confirmed that dedicated father involvement is critical to the healthy development of children.  With increased father involvement out comes for children are:

  • Increased self esteem
  • Increased emotional well being and trusting relationships with other
  • Increased success in school
  • Fewer behavioural problems

Father’s need to feel confident stepping into this important role.

Whatever your family looks like, whether you are a teen father, have a new baby, live with the mother, or co-parent or single parent, have many children, have on child, see your child on weekends, or live with them, we have parenting programs and support that can help answer your questions and make the journey a lot more fun.

From our Be a Great Dad 5 week conversation group that explores the 5 things that great dad’s do, to our LEAP (dad and child groups), to in Home Coaching, drop in resource centres, phone support and more.

Families Matter is offering the Caring Dads program. The program helps fathers strengthen healthy relationships with their children. The program is offered twice per week. Caring Dads is designed for fathers who want to change behaviors that can lead to violence, or are at risk of exposing their children to abusive or neglectful behaviors. Fathers participating in the program will learn strategies to cope with frustrations, develop realistic expectations and change their perspective to better understand, and meet the needs of their children. Caring Dads means safer children. Please note : upon registration you will be contacted by Mike for intake for this program.

Papa Bears

Modeled on the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program® this is a group experience for dads and their young children that focuses on the pleasure and development of literacy skill through the use of rhymes, songs, and stories together. Dads gain skills and confidence which can enable them to create positive family patterns during their children's crucial early years, and give their children healthy early experiences with language and communication. Be sure to bring your child along (1-4 years old).

Postpartum Depression Education for Dads

PPD affects the entire family. We invite the Dad’s to join us in order to better understand postpartum difficulties and depression. • Dads will learn strategies that can help Mom feel better. • Relationship and communication tools will be discussed. • Getting better – getting through it stronger than before. This program is limited to 10 Dads and is facilitated by Jory & Amanda McMillian, who have experienced PPD and will share how to effectively move through this.
